OPPOSITES ATTRACT

Sorry to have dropped out for a while, life is going very fast at the moment. I can hardly believe its been a month since I last posted. Here's something I eventually found that made my heart go thump!

This is a story about a dying professor who is now too sick to carry on teaching, his students who are praying for a miracle and the awfully sad ending to his lifetime passion. Makes for a very unusual story on a few levels really.

Professor of Law Stephen Gey is rapidly succumbing to Lou Gehrig's disease.
"Lou Gehrig's disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a progressive, incurable disease that destroys motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Famed physicist Stephen Hawking has the hereditary kind, which is devastating, but not life-threatening. Gey has the nonhereditary kind, which kills by slow paralysis."

"One of the few hopeful avenues of ALS research has involved the transplanting of embryonic stem cells. Such research has been limited for seven years in the United States by religious conservatives and the Bush administration. His adversaries have erased his last chance. "The irony doesn't escape me."

"Gey uses a lawyer's words to define his situation: cognitive dissonance. He cannot pray for a miracle. "I have a disease you wouldn't give to your worst enemy," he says, as if arguing before a jury. "If you believe in a caring, all-knowing God, how can you reconcile that? I can only approach it fatalistically. Stuff happens."

I was wondering where you went ;-)

I thought, seeing as he's a American Civil Liberties Union attorney, the fundytards would be happy he's going to hell!

I hate it when they prey!

I was thinking the same about you for a while :)

Shirley you mean pray :0

Oh and about the funditards, they know he's going to hell, but just dont want him to go until they graduate...hence the request for a miracle.

so they prey on him...

lol. fundies prey on the minds of the weak offering faith as a substitute for reason and rational thinking. They pray for their success and celebrate the debilitation of the minds of those in their groups.

You were both dearly missed, I'm glad you've both popped up again. You've been rather like prairie dogs, poppin' your heads up, then ducking back down again. Then unexpectedly up.
Up down up down.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
;)

Fiery, aint that the truth about the fundies....strange and wierd!

Yes I have been very slack with the blog, often I see things that would be good subject matter and then see that lots of others have already blogged it....plus I'm always struggling with the time factor....popping up and down must be my way to go unfortunately, at the moment anyways....:)xx

Did you know that Lou Gehrig actually GOT Lou Gehrig's disease? What are the odds of that?

Thump Thump Eyes said...

Yes, thank you very much markarios, I can google, just like most people can....what is your point?

"In the United States, the condition is often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, after the New York Yankees baseball star who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939 and died from it two years later; today, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking is likely the most well-known living ALS patient."

It's a joke!!! In fact, it's a pretty funny joke - I think. On the other hand, my wife says that if I have to tell people that it's a joke then maybe it's not that funny.

You atheists sure are a serious lot.

I think I must agree with your wife makarios, because funnily enough I didnt think your little joke was funny...go figure.

I'm a human first, and also a freethinker. I'm not trussed up like a chicken in dogma, I treat small children and animals with a lot of care, attention and respect. I also treat adults with a lot of respect and care if they need it, I've never physically hurt anyone or anything in my life. However I'm always wary of certain individuals who pop up for no reason and try to cosy up for no reason....although I'll engage them in a conversation so I can judge them further...just a human trait I guess ;)

Hmm, would you agree that we're born atheists; that atheism is our default position?

**sigh** my religious radar is pinging at your question, so I'll tell you truthfully I have no desire to debate you on this subject. I've done it before with others and find its like talking to a brick wall - literally!

Let it be makarios, be happy in your world, and I'll be happy in mine, both knowing that never the twain shall meet :)

FYI and just in case you've never heard it before the following is an explanation of 'never the twain shall meet'... quite appropriate I think.

Never the twain shall meet...
Meaning:
Two things which are so different as to have no opportunity to unite.
Origin:
Twain derives from the Old English twegen, meaning two. The phrase never the twain shall meet was used by Rudyard Kipling, in his Barrack-room ballads, 1892:
"Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet."
There, Kipling is lamenting the gulf of understanding between the British and the inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent.
