omg why does that make my stomach queasy??? blech.

Reminded me of Dogbert's little wagging tail from the Dilbert comics.

Our evolution has just taken a sickening step backward, as if we didn't know that already.

G'day Reg, fancy seeing you here...interesting comment.

"Our evolution has just taken a sickening step backward, as if we didn't know that already"

What do you mean exactly?

T&A, I've never seen anything like this before, definite thump material!!!

Fiery, It does give the stomach a little lurch doesnt it:) even though I could see that he could move it a little, I still wondered whether he ever had uncontrollable wagging problems!!

So when did you start blogging and how long were you going to keep it a secret?

Howdie Sean, nice to see you...:)

I got the blog off the ground as soon as we went on holidays (xmyth). I had a few attempts before that and due to time constraints I could never get a handle on it all...

I wasnt meaning to keep it a secret, just thought I'd start the whole process, hope that it wasnt a total fuk up, and that the word would spread around slowly, seems to be spreading a little now that Fiery has given her nod of approval (thanks sweetsis):-)

I was just being silly.

One could call the tale vestigial, but since it does have some value (it is so disgusting, your competition for food would lose their appetite), it would fall into some other category.

It definitely has shock value, but I wouldnt call it disgusting Reg, I have to think what I would feel like if my baby had one, and hey its not such a big deal really!

Anyway, here's another tail pic with more info, it seems that all human embryo have tails....and this one is probably a remnant of that...

http://www.thefetus.net/page.php?id=997

"During the 5th-6th week, the human embryo has a tail with 10 to 12 vertebrae. Then, it starts to regress, reducing the number of vertebrae by fusion, leaving the vestigial coccyx. By this process, at 8 weeks, it disappears, although the exact moment varies. The persistent tail probably arises from the most distal non-vertebrate remnant of the embryonic tail".

"Several 19th century medical reports and popular tales mentioned human tails. In was believed that the embryo, during its development passed through the form of inferior animals. In fact, most malformations were thought to be errors in the transition between inferior species and humans. In particular, Darwin describes a case to support his theory related with human evolution in “The descent of Man”.

"There are many reports of this anomaly. Some report that tribes in Paraguay, Borneo and Philippines, have individuals with tails".

"Bartels et al. in 1884 reviewed cases reported to that date finding 116. Of the 68 cases in which the sex was mentioned, 52 were male and only 16 were female infants. In a similar report, Lu et al. reviewed cases between 1960 and 1997 finding only 59. He reported an association with spina bifida was 20%".

"When we compare this “human tail” with the tail of other vertebrates, the difference is evident. This tails do not contain vertebral structures. In fact, there is only one case reported in medical literature in which the human tail had vertebral remnants".

Hello! Yes, I do remember a child having a tail removed in a case back in the 90s... rather like any additional appendage.
Anyway, found you via your comment on Digital Cuttlefish's blog; great to meet a fellow West Australian atheist and I'll add you to my blogroll! Cheers! :)

I wouldn't call it disgusting either, creepy but not gross. I dunno, I think if the dude knows how to work that thing he might have a pretty lucrative career in porn if he wants. :D

Welcome Pod, *smiles and waves* I'm very glad to meet another West Aussie Athiest too, I think the numbers are rising:)

Thanks for adding me to your blogroll, I tried to check your blog...but no access:( maybe you arent up and running as yet:)

Isnt The Digital Cuttlefish fantastic, so talented, just whips up those poems about whatever he is thinking about..amazing!!!! Did you see his "An Athiest Christmas"? Bloody marvellous, if I had seen it before xmyth I think I would have plucked up enough courage and asked him if I could use it on some Athiest non-xmyth cards I was thinking about doing...check this great guy out everyone....

I did a little more research on the tale, and usually they cant be moved around like a real tale as in the video, so his must be unusual...not a great deal of info out there.

Poodles: Oh yeah, I thought of that too...threesome takes on a whole new meaning:D...although I wonder how much feeling he has in it?
